چکیده

In this paper I specify a height production function in order to study the determinants of height from birth to early adulthood in the Philippines. I use a rich longitudinal data set on Filipino children born in 1983 and followed for more than 20 years. The structure of the production function allows height to be the result of the accumulation of inputs over time. The results show that inputs from conception to birth are relevant at each age of the children. Nutrition inputs have a positive but small effect on the child’s height. The shorter the distance between the age when the nutrition input is applied and the age when height is measured, the higher the impact on height. The older the child, the bigger the impact with a peak during the growth spurt. The earlier disease inputs are experienced, the stronger their negative effect on height. The older the child, the stronger the effects of past diseases. ∗I would like to thank my supervisor, Franco Peracchi for his patience and excellent advice. I thank Jere Behrman for his precious comments. I also thank Kenneth Wolpin, Petra Todd and Flavio Cunha for their helpful suggestions. I thank Linda Adair and the Cebu team for the data and constant help. Special thanks to Nicola Barban for his continous support and encouragement. I also thank the empirical micro club participants at the University of Pennsylvania (academic year 2008-2009), in particular Shalini Roy, Nirav Mehta and Seth Richards, for their valuable help. I really thank Lara Patricio Tavares, Melody Garcia and Tania De Renzis for correcting my English in the paper. All errors are my own. †Department SEFEMEQ, University of Rome “Tor Vergata,” Italy. The height production function from birth to maturity

Abstract Height is the result of a complex process of growth that begins at birth and reaches the end in early adulthood. This paper studies the determinants of height from birth to maturity. A height production function is specified whose structure allows height to be the result of the accumulation of inputs (i.e., nutrition and diseases) over time. The empirical specification allows the causa...

Birth weight and cognitive function in early adulthood: the Australian Aboriginal birth cohort study.

It has been suggested that in addition to genetic factors, fetal and post-natal growth influence cognition in early adulthood. However, most studies have been in developed populations, so it is unclear if the same findings would be seen in other, less developed, settings, and have used testing tools not applicable to an Australia Aboriginal population. This study investigated the relationships ...

Extremely low birth weight and body size in early adulthood.

AIMS To determine the body size of extremely low birth weight (ELBW, birth weight 500-999 g) subjects in early adulthood. METHODS Cohort study examining the height and weight of 42 ELBW survivors free of cerebral palsy between birth and 20 years of age. Weight and height measurements were converted to Z (SD) scores. RESULTS At birth the subjects had weight Z scores substantially below zero ...

The Association of Fetal and Early Childhood Growth with Adult Mental Distress: Evidence from the Johns Hopkins Collaborative Perinatal Study Birth Cohort

OBJECTIVES Early childhood physical growth may have an impact on the development of adult mental distress. The primary objectives were to (1) assess the association of early growth in weight (adjusted for height) with adult mental distress, and (2) determine if specific sub-types, or patterns, of early physical growth are associated with adult mental distress. METHODS Subjects were all Johns ...

The Effect of Prenatal and Childhood Development on Hearing, Vision and Cognition in Adulthood

It is unclear what the contribution of prenatal versus childhood development is for adult cognitive and sensory function and age-related decline in function. We examined hearing, vision and cognitive function in adulthood according to self-reported birth weight (an index of prenatal development) and adult height (an index of early childhood development). Subsets (N = 37,505 to 433,390) of the U...
